Damascus steel or pattern-welded is the name given to the composite steel forged from two or more different steels. The name comes from its birthplace, Damascus, the ancient fortress of producing patterned steel. In common practice, harder high-carbon steel and milder low-carbon steel are repeatedly forge-welded and folded together. High-carbon steel provides greater hardness, better edge retention, and longer blade life, while milder steel gives the blade more flexibility and tensile strength. This process, developed at a time when steel properties were often low and inconsistent, enables the combination of positive properties of different steels. Additionally, the different shades created by varying carbon content in alternating layers produce striking patterns, such as the twisted motif known as the pattern of torsion Damascus steel or the rose pattern of Damascus steel. Undoubtedly these unusual patterns partly explain why Damascus steel blades in the Middle Ages were attributed with inherent magical properties. Such a Damascus blade of a sword is depicted in Eddie as a bloody worm or poisonous snake.
